This month from PHA

Hi Friend,

We can’t believe it’s already September! With lots of exciting announcements in the news and the start of a new school year, we’re excited for the start of Fall.

We also want to take a moment to highlight Hispanic Heritage Month, which starts on September 15. To honor this year's theme, “Todos Somos, Somos Uno: We Are All, We Are One”, we’ll be lifting up Hispanic Americans pushing the food equity movement forward on our social media channels.

We’re grateful for our community of supporters like you, Friend. You’re helping us transform our food system to support a better future for us all. Continue reading for the latest updates:

Upcoming Legislation: Farm Bill

Did you know that the 2023 Farm Bill affects more than just farming?

If passed, it could help ensure a safe, abundant, and more affordable food supply for all Americans. The proposed legislation, which is renewed every five years, affects food, nutritional support programs, and ultimately public health.

The legislation is still being finalized but we’re excited by the chance to ensure it reflects the needs of all Americans and helps to transform the food landscape.

Check out our blog to learn more and please consider sharing this information with your network to help drive support of this essential legislation.

Just Released: Impact Results from Indianapolis

Together with our partner Instacart, we’re excited to share the impact results of our Good Food for All program in Indianapolis, and to announce an expansion of the program into four additional cities later this year.

Launched in February, the Indianapolis program tested the feasibility of a produce credit model, in which families were given $50 in produce credits per month – redeemable through either a local brick-and-mortar store or online through Instacart Fresh Funds – for three months. Results showed that the pilot supported significant improvements in food and nutrition security for families.

The expanded program will provide Instacart Fresh Funds to more than 1,100 families in four new cities: Denver, Colorado; Englewood, New Jersey; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Washington D.C., and advance Instacart and PHA’s joint 2022 commitment to deliver 10 million servings of fruits and vegetables to underserved communities by 2025.

“PHA launched its Good Food for All program because we believe that everyone — no matter their zip code — deserves healthy food, yet far too many families across the country are lacking access to it,” said Noreen Springstead, President & CEO of Partnership for a Healthier America. “Our work with Instacart and the city of Indianapolis is just the first step in making good food accessible and affordable for all, and we’re eager to continue this great work in Denver, Englewood, Milwaukee and D.C. this year.”

Food Equity In the News

A significant new study published in the journal Circulation found that people who received vouchers for free or reduced-price produce as part of a produce prescription program were more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables and have lower blood pressure and blood sugar. The study suggests that produce prescription programs could be a promising way to reduce the risk of chronic diet related diseases!

Participants in the study ate an additional 1.5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day on average and experienced significant reductions in blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index. You can read the full article on the CBS News website.
